Sharon Haanes Bryant’s web cartoon ROCKYDALE UNIVERSE has garnered her an international following of readers young and old. Sharon’s drawn worlds have taken her readers as far away as the NORTH POLE ACADEMY (World’s Top School) and as close to home as the fictional cul-de-sac of ROCKYDALE, inspired by her own small Vermont town, which has itself become a destination for fans hoping to stay at the “Rockydale Tourist Home” or meet up with its diverse residents at “Ken’s Café.” Even Sharon admits that “walking around town feels, at times, like I’ve stepped into one of my own cartoons.”
Sharon has an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts where she was the first recipient of the Houghton Mifflin Scholar’s Prize for work on her middle-grade novel THE EARTH KITCHEN published by HarperCollins. Her natural science illustrations have hung at the Smithsonian and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. In 2009, when a real-life event sparked a moment of invention, Rockydale Universe was born.
Sharon’s drawings and sketches are created on a variety of papers using watercolor, marker pen, colored pencils, gouache, and pen & ink with digitized color.
